If you've ever been..

  • Passed over for promotion
  • In a panic with a sick child or missing childcare on a key day at work
  • Judged negatively when you've had to leave work early to deal with 'home stuff'
  • Faced a huge unexpected bill when you haven't had the budget to cover it
  • Concerned about your health or wellbeing

Chances are, there are gaps in your network. Many women leaders pay attention to and develop a strong career network, but fail to do the same for all the other areas of their lives. And the right, robust support in these areas is critical if you are to succeed and further your career.

The first step is simply to recognise where, when and why you need support in your life.  Emergencies crop up from time to time. Rather than be upended by one, plan to have the support you need in place beforehand.

Where Support is Needed

There are four key areas of your life where you need support if you are to realise your full potential as the talented woman leader you are:

    1. Your Career. This is a given, yet many women leaders fail to develop and tap into a broad enough network of colleagues, mentors, sponsors and industry influencers to truly support them in advancing their careers.
    2. Your Vitality. Your health and wellbeing, your energy. How often do you ignore your own needs to complete an assignment at work, or care for others at home? Your wellbeing is non-negotiable, and support in this area is critical.
    3. Your Wealth. To ensure you manage your money, budget for the essentials and the 'nice-to-haves', and invest wisely for your future.
    4. Your Relationships. These are your intimate relationships with your partner or spouse, your family, your friends. The right day-to-day support here is a given. So too, are the emergency call outs when something fails to go according to plan.

Evaluate and Expand your Network

Step back and take an objective look at each of these areas of your life. Where are you doing well?  Where less so?  It's likely, you're successful in those areas of your life where you have good support, and struggle in areas where support is lacking.

You may need practical support at home, advice, sponsors and mentors for your career, advisers, guidance with your finances, accountability to keep you on track with your fitness routine, or simply someone to turn to for emotional or spiritual support.

There's an exercise in the playbook you can go through to ensure you really do fill all those gaps. You'll find the playbook in the members area.

Once you have that robust support network in place, nurture and maintain it. Adapt it and change it as your circumstances change.

And remember...

Ask for the help you need
